Curse of the Crimson Throne
Built upon the bones of of two ancient civilizations, Korvosa was once the capital of Varisia when Varisia was just a province of the Chelish Empire. Korvosa is still the largest city in Varisia and its economic and military might give it dominion over a huge swath of land. Despite its history, despite its power, and despite its wealth, the city is a troubled place.
When people talk about the “curse of the crimson throne” what they refer to is the terrible luck of the rulers of the city. Since its founding, not a single King has died of natural causes and all have died without an heir. This has made each and every exchange of power turbulent and dangerous.
King Eodred Arabasti II has had a steady if unexceptional reign and is best known for his keen skill at dealing with the noble houses of both Korvosa and Cheliax. He’s negotiated numerous favorable trade agreements with Korvosa’s former mother country, and is most respected for initiating numerous good works within the city. His private life, however, is marked by scandal and excessive spending, and Eodred is well-known for having an expensive liking for young women yet he has yet to sire an heir (illegitimate or otherwise). It surprised no one, that when he finally married, it was to a girl young enough to be his granddaughter.
The curse of the crimson throne looms over Korvosa now. King Eodred suffers from some exotic form of incurable leprosy has resisted the magic of the most powerful priests in the city. Eodred’s days are numbered and his wife, Queen Ileosa, is inexperienced, spoiled and not well-liked. What will happen to Korvosa when the King dies and leaves a girl barely out of her teens upon the throne?
